How can I use Changes'98 as a Jazz Ensemble Teacher?
Answer: I suggest you use the Chord and Chord Scale Speller to work all the solos you have.  Write out a blank lead sheet with the chord symbols, then query the speller for each chord's chord scale.  You can choose a Mode for the whole passage and print off a worksheet for the student to practice.  The music prints on its own page and you can give them the chart so they can learn that mode or scale in all keys.  All examples include the answers in both bass and treble clef.  You can send any harmonic rhythm player home with a Chord Substitution sheet as necessary to encourage them to experiment with different chord voicings and sounds.

What about those hip-sounding modal chords like Bruce Hornsby and people like Pat Metheny play all the time?  Answer: Coming soon to this site . . . When I figure out how to organize and develop some kind of notation we can use to teach and label it, it will be on available on this site.  Ronnie Miller at the University of Miami is the guru of modal chords and the theory behind them.  He's the only guy who has really developed a system to cover these chords.  This is undoubtedly the coolest stuff out there and every artist I've heard is using it, but we need some kind of labeling system.  Call with your suggestions!
